Gathered panels from a SCL Design Project

The gathered panel is easy to make, easy to install and requires very little hardware.  Those are just a few reasons why it makes my “Top Three” list!  The fabricator creates a rod pocket with a small “header” or ruffle at the top horizontal lead edge.  This header can be in the same or a contrasting fabric.  As with the trim on the pleated panels, a contrast fabric adds “pop” and definition to the panel.  It also helps to create a more individual or custom look.

The gathered panel is an excellent choice for tight budgets.  There is very little hardware involved and no tricky pleats to lay out and sew; therefore it is less labor intensive.

I often use a variation of this treatment, called a gathered waterfall panel.  With this treatment, the fabricator creates a long shirred panel by gathering the fabric with shirring or smocking tape at the top of the window treatment.  The panel is then attached to the back of a round wooden pole with staples or strong Velcro tape.  It then gently “waterfalls” over the front of the pole.  This treatment works really well as stationary end panels over sheers or grass shades.
