Granite is an igneous rock composed mostly of quartz and feldspar, with other minerals that add variety in color and graining to each rock.  Granite forms very slowly below the earth’s surface.  It is quarried from the earth and cut into slabs for home and commercial use.

A slab of Granite

Because granite is a natural stone, each slab is different.  This uniqueness is part of the beauty and appeal of granite.  Each slab, even if part of the same lot, will have variations in color, veining and movement.  There will also be imperfections, which is all part of the natural beauty and charm of granite.

Due to this vast variation, I recommend homeowners visit a granite showroom or fabricator to view and “tag” the slabs they want.

Granite is extremely hard and resists chipping, scratching, etching or staining.  It is also can tolerate high heat.  It is very durable and will virtually last forever.  Granite is porous and needs to be sealed periodically.  Avoid harsh cleaning products, especially those that are acid based and contain lemon or vinegar.  Simply clean with a mild detergent and warm water.
